Intermediate half marathon training plans
Free intermediate half marathon plans at 3 lengths. Cutback weeks, a capped long run and a real taper — plus how to tell this is the right level for you.
These plans are for a runner who has finished a half marathon and now wants a time. They assume an existing base of roughly 30–40 km a week and that you are comfortable running four times a week.
Four runs a week, one of them a tempo session.
Is this the right level for you?
You are in the right place if you have raced 21.1 km before, you run at least three times most weeks without it feeling like an event, and you have a specific finish time in mind.
If you have never raced the distance, the beginner plans are not a downgrade — they are the block that builds the base these plans assume you already have.
What this level actually changes
The change from beginner is one tempo session and one extra easy day, and the extra easy day matters more than most runners expect.
Tempo work raises the pace you can hold before fatigue compounds. Easy volume raises the ceiling that tempo work operates under. Runners who plateau at this level have almost always added the hard session and skipped the easy one, because more easy running feels too gentle to be doing anything.
Which length should you pick?
Count the weeks between today and your race, then take the plan that fits inside that window rather than the one that exactly fills it. A block with a spare week absorbs the illness or work trip that a perfectly-fitted one cannot.
If you are between two lengths, take the longer one. A missed week in a compressed plan forces a decision about whether to skip the long run — and that decision is where most training blocks quietly end.
When to move on
If you are already running five days a week and want a second quality session, the advanced plans add interval work on top of this structure.
The 10-week block
This is the intermediate version — it assumes a race at this distance behind you and a target time in mind. It runs 10 weeks, 4 days a week, and peaks at 44 km in the hardest week.
If that sounds like too much or too little, the same half marathon block exists at other levels and lengths — the related plans below are the same engine with different inputs.
