The short answer
Runsy's synthesis: the average 10K finish time is around 57:52 for men and 1:08:17 for women. The one source publishing an overall figure gives a median of 1:02:08 for all finishers.
10K is the distance where the published record is unusually good. Alongside the two large-sample industry studies, there is a peer-reviewed paper covering 16,315 measured 10K finishers that reports mean pace by age group and sex — the exact table everyone else generates from a formula. We print the real one below, along with the reason you should not treat it as global.
How we built the figure
There is no single dataset that reports finish-time distributions for road running. So instead of picking one number and calling it the average, we did this:
- Collected every published central figure we could trace to a named source with a stated sample size.
- Discarded anything we could not trace to its origin. A magazine quoting a statistic is not a source; we followed each figure back to the study that produced it, and dropped it when the trail went cold.
- Took the unweighted mean of the surviving figures. Unweighted, deliberately: the samples overlap heavily and are not independent, so weighting by sample size would just hand the answer to whichever study counted the most rows.
- Published the range as well as the midpoint. Where the sources disagree, the disagreement is the finding.
The result is Runsy's synthesis of published data. It is not a measurement, and we do not present it as one. It is the middle of what the published record actually says, with the edges shown.
Two things the arithmetic cannot fix
We are averaging means with medians. The percentile study reports a 50th percentile; the others report an average. Finish-time distributions have a long slow tail, so the mean sits later than the median. Mixing them widens our range and pulls the midpoint slightly late. We say so rather than quietly picking whichever suits.
Some figures are converted from a published pace, not a published time. Where a source reports average pace per kilometre, we multiply by the race distance. That is arithmetic on their number, not a new number — but the mean of a set of paces is not identical to the pace of the mean time, so treat converted figures as the coarser of the two kinds. Each one is labelled below.

Every number below is one we could trace to a named publisher who states what they measured and how many results they measured it over. Nothing here is modelled, estimated or carried over from a secondary write-up.

The first two share a publisher. The third is independent of them: Pacing in Long-Distance Running: Sex and Age Differences in 10-km Race and Marathon, published in Medicina in 2021, using official results from the Oslo 10‑km race. It is the only genuinely independent input on this page, and it is the smallest.

A 75-second disagreement on the men's figure is the tightest agreement of any distance we looked at. One is a median and one is a mean converted from pace, so they are not measuring quite the same thing and landing this close is a mild vote of confidence in both. The women's figure is wider at 2:46, which is the long slow tail doing what it always does to a mean.
We did not fold the Oslo paper into the synthesis: it reports one city's race, and a mean of nine age-group paces is not a field average. It earns its own table instead.
Average 10K time by age and sex — measured, not modelled
From Cuk, Nikolaidis, Villiger and Knechtle (2021), Oslo 10‑km race, 2015–2018, 16,315 finishers. The paper publishes mean pace in minutes per kilometre for each age group and sex; we have multiplied by 10 km to give finish times, which is arithmetic on their figures and nothing more. Note the paper's own age bands overlap slightly at 34–39; we reproduce them as published rather than tidying them.

Read this table with its limits attached
It is one race, in one city, over four years. Oslo's field is faster than the global average — every figure here is quicker than the corresponding global number above, and Norway is not a representative sample of the world's 10K runners. Use it for the shape of the age curve, which is what it actually measures well, rather than as the absolute standard for your age.
And the shape is the interesting part. From 24 to 54, men lose under four minutes and women lose about three. The decline only becomes steep after 55. Across 40-plus years of ageing the total cost is roughly 13 minutes for men and 11 for women — far less than the gap between a trained and an untrained runner of the same age.

What we could not support, and left out
- A global age-by-sex table. The age table above is one Norwegian race. We have no traceable worldwide breakdown by age, and we did not manufacture one by scaling Oslo's numbers to the global median — that would be a model wearing a citation.
- Percentiles by age. No source publishes them. Percentiles here are for the whole field, at every age.
- Anything from parkrun or its community scrapes and dataset mirrors: their terms prohibit reuse.
- A recency-adjusted figure. The two large studies cover periods ending in 2018 and “the last 20 years” respectively. We have no published post-2018 global 10K data.

What is the average 10K time?
Runsy's synthesis of two large published studies puts it at about 57:52 for men and 1:08:17 for women. The one source publishing an overall figure gives a median of 1:02:08 for all finishers. The two sources agree unusually closely for men — 75 seconds apart — despite one reporting a median and the other an average converted from pace.
Is a 60-minute 10K good?
Yes. On the RunRepeat percentile study of 35 million race results, a sub-60 10K puts you inside the fastest 40% of all finishers and inside the fastest 30% of women. The median finisher is around 1:02:08.
What is a good 10K time for my age?
The only age-by-sex 10K table we could trace to a published measurement comes from a peer-reviewed study of 16,315 finishers at the Oslo 10-km race between 2015 and 2018. It gives means from 51:19 (men, 18–23) to 1:12:39 (women, 65+). Treat it as the shape of the age curve rather than an absolute standard: Oslo's field is faster than the global average, so every figure in it runs quick.
How much slower does 10K running get with age?
Less than most people expect, and not smoothly. In the Oslo data, men lose under four minutes and women about three between the ages of 24 and 54. The decline only becomes steep after 55, and the total cost across 40-plus years of ageing is roughly 13 minutes for men and 11 for women.
Are 10K averages based on all runners or only racers?
Only racers, and only those who finish. Every figure here is derived from official race results, so the population is people who entered an event and crossed the line — a fitter and more committed group than runners generally. No published dataset we could find measures the wider running population.
