Strava vs Garmin

Garmin Connect is the record your watch writes. Strava is the layer you add on top. They link together, so this is rarely the either-or it looks like.

Start here: they are not exclusive

Almost every version of this question online is phrased as a fight. It usually is not one. Garmin documents how to link a Garmin Connect account to Strava, with a setting that automatically shares your Garmin activities across, and Strava separately documents uploading exported Garmin files by hand. In practice most Garmin owners record on the watch, let the data land in Garmin Connect, and let it flow onward to Strava.

So the useful question is not which app. It is what does the second one add that the first does not. Answering that saves you either a subscription or a lot of scrolling.

What each one costs, and what it is for

Garmin's figures are from its Garmin Connect+ announcement of 27 March 2025. Strava does not publish a subscription price we can verify from a primary source, so its paid tier is described by what it contains.

What Garmin Connect gives you, free

Garmin Connect is the companion app for Garmin devices, and it is free. Everything your watch measures lands there: pace, heart rate, sleep, recovery, training load, and a history you own without paying anything.

It also contains a training product most Garmin owners underuse. Garmin Coach offers free adaptive plans built by three named coaches — Jeff Galloway, Greg McMillan and Amy Parkerson-Mitchell — covering 5K, 10K and half marathon, with workouts that adjust as your fitness changes and sync step by step to a compatible watch. Marathon distance sits under Garmin Run Coach, a newer engine that builds daily workouts from your performance, recovery and health metrics. There is also a daily suggested workout, which weighs sleep quality, stress, training load and recovery status before proposing what to do today.

In March 2025 Garmin added an optional paid tier. Garmin stated in the Connect+ announcement that all existing features and data in Garmin Connect remain free, and the free training plans were not moved behind it.

What Strava adds on top

Strava is a social network and an analysis layer for activities that were, in most cases, recorded on something else. Its free tier covers recording, the community feed, safety features, basic route browsing and your training history. Its subscription adds routes and offline maps, advanced training and workout analysis, segment leaderboards, custom goals, fitness score tracking over time, and creating or joining challenges.

Two things Strava genuinely has that Garmin Connect does not. First, segments — the same stretch of road timed across everybody who has ever run it, which is a competitive format Garmin has no direct equivalent for, and which lives on the paid tier. Second, other people: the value of a social feed is entirely a function of who is already in it.

If neither of those appeals, it is entirely reasonable to own a Garmin and never install Strava.

Coaching: Garmin is free, Strava is now an acquisition

On the question of what to actually run, the two have arrived from opposite directions.

Garmin built coaching in and gave it away, because Garmin's business is selling watches. Strava did not have it, and bought it: Strava announced an agreement to acquire the coaching app Runna on 17 April 2025, said it would keep the apps separate for the foreseeable future, and the two are now sold as a combined subscription bundle.

So if you want a structured plan and you already own a Garmin, you have one for free. The paid route is worth it when you have outgrown what the free plan offers, not by default.

The honest split

  1. 01

    Garmin Connect on its own

You own a Garmin, you train mostly alone, you want the data and a plan. This is free, complete, and more than most runners ever use.

  2. 02

    Garmin Connect plus free Strava

You want your friends to see the runs. This costs nothing, and Garmin can push activities across automatically once the accounts are linked.

  3. 03

Garmin Connect plus the Strava subscription

You want segment leaderboards, route planning, offline maps or the deeper analysis. These are the paid features, and they are the only honest reason to pay.

What neither one does

There is a fourth case: Strava only, because you have no Garmin and record on your phone. If that is you, this comparison was never really about Garmin — it was about whether to buy a watch.

Whichever configuration you land on, both apps are excellent at describing what already happened and neither is good at the decision that follows a bad week. Miss three sessions to illness or travel and Garmin will suggest an easier workout tomorrow while Strava will show a thinner bar on a chart — but the question of whether the race plan still holds, whether to repeat the week or write it off, comes back to you. Analysis is not the same as a revised plan, and no amount of data resolves the judgement call by itself.

When the week goes wrong, the plan should move

Fair questions

Do I need Strava if I have a Garmin?

No. Garmin Connect is free and records everything your watch measures, including free adaptive training plans. Strava is worth adding for the social feed, segment leaderboards, route planning and deeper analysis — and only the feed and basic browsing are free.

Can Garmin activities go to Strava automatically?

Yes. Garmin documents linking your Garmin Connect account to Strava with a setting that automatically shares your Garmin activities. Strava also documents manually uploading files exported from Garmin Connect if you would rather control it run by run.

Is Garmin Connect free?

Yes. Garmin added an optional paid tier, Garmin Connect+, on 27 March 2025 at $6.99/month or $69.99/year, and said at the same time that all existing Garmin Connect features and data remain free.

Does Garmin have segments like Strava?

Not in the same form. Timed segment leaderboards across all athletes are Strava's signature feature and part of its subscription. If that is what you want from running apps, Strava is the answer.

Which is better for training plans?

Garmin, on price. Garmin Coach gives free adaptive plans for 5K, 10K and half marathon from three named coaches, with marathon covered by Garmin Run Coach. Strava's route to structured coaching is Runna, which it acquired in 2025 and sells as a paid bundle.
