The short answer, and how confident we are in it
Runsy's synthesis: the average 5K finish time is around 33:24 for men and 39:29 for women. The single source that publishes an overall median puts all finishers at 34:37.
Now the part nobody else tells you: the two sources behind those numbers disagree by nearly four minutes, and we could only find two. 5K has the weakest published evidence of any common race distance and the most confidently fabricated tables. If you want a single number to the second, somebody else will give you one. It will not be measured.
How we built the figure
There is no single dataset that reports finish-time distributions for road running. So instead of picking one number and calling it the average, we did this:
- Collected every published central figure we could trace to a named source with a stated sample size.
- Discarded anything we could not trace to its origin. A magazine quoting a statistic is not a source; we followed each figure back to the study that produced it, and dropped it when the trail went cold.
- Took the unweighted mean of the surviving figures. Unweighted, deliberately: the samples overlap heavily and are not independent, so weighting by sample size would just hand the answer to whichever study counted the most rows.
- Published the range as well as the midpoint. Where the sources disagree, the disagreement is the finding.
The result is Runsy's synthesis of published data. It is not a measurement, and we do not present it as one. It is the middle of what the published record actually says, with the edges shown.
Two things the arithmetic cannot fix
We are averaging means with medians. The percentile study reports a 50th percentile; the others report an average. Finish-time distributions have a long slow tail, so the mean sits later than the median. Mixing them widens our range and pulls the midpoint slightly late. We say so rather than quietly picking whichever suits.
Some figures are converted from a published pace, not a published time. Where a source reports average pace per kilometre, we multiply by the race distance. That is arithmetic on their number, not a new number — but the mean of a set of paces is not identical to the pace of the mean time, so treat converted figures as the coarser of the two kinds. Each one is labelled below.
The two sources
Every number below is one we could trace to a named publisher who states what they measured and how many results they measured it over. Nothing here is modelled, estimated or carried over from a secondary write-up.

Both are published by RunRepeat, and the second was produced in collaboration with the IAAF and presented in 2019. So this is not two independent readings of the world — it is one research operation, twice. We say so because it materially affects how much weight the agreement (or the disagreement) deserves.

Why the gap is this wide
Three reasons, and all of them are methodology rather than runners. One is a median and the other is a mean, and the slow tail of a 5K field — walkers, charity entrants, first-timers — drags the mean well past the middle. One covers roughly the last twenty years and the other reaches back to 1986. And the converted figure is pace-derived, so it carries the coarseness described above.
The State of Running report makes an observation that explains a lot of the rest: 5K has the slowest average pace of any race distance, slower even than the marathon, because it is the entry distance for almost everyone who races. The 5K field is where new runners are. That is not a statistical artefact to correct for — it is the actual population.
Where your 5K time sits in the field
The percentile study is the only source we found that publishes a full distribution for 5K. These are its figures, as published.

Read against that distribution, a sub‑30 5K puts you inside the fastest 30% of the whole field and, for women, comfortably inside the fastest 30%. Sub‑25 is roughly the top 10%. Sub‑20 is close to the top 1%.
One more calibration, from the national breakdown in The State of Running 2019: the fastest 5K nations average around 25:08 to 25:13 for men (Ukraine, Spain, Switzerland) and the slowest average 42:15 to 50:46 (the Philippines, New Zealand, Thailand). A ten-minute swing depending on which country's races you happen to enter should tell you how much weight to put on any single global average.

What we could not support, and left out
- An age-by-sex table of 5K times. This is the centrepiece of every page ranking for this term and we could not find a published measurement behind any of them. The result at #2 prints one with no citation anywhere and states on its own about page that its standards come from well-known formulas. A formula-generated table is a model of a runner, not data about runners, and we are not shipping one dressed up as data.
- Anything from parkrun. parkrun is by far the largest source of 5K finish times in the world, and its terms prohibit scraping and data reuse. That also rules out the community scrapes and dataset mirrors built from it. We did not use them, which is the single biggest reason this page has two sources instead of five.
- An overall (all-finisher) average. Only one of our two sources publishes one, so there is nothing to synthesise. We print its median and label it as a single-source figure.
- Treadmill or GPS-app 5K data. Not race results and not published as aggregates we could cite.
If you want a benchmark that is built on a published standard rather than a survey of who showed up, use an age-graded percentage. The World Masters Athletics factors are a maintained reference table for every age and sex, which is exactly the thing the 5K finish-time record lacks.

What is the average 5K time?
Runsy's synthesis of the two sources we could trace puts it at about 33:24 for men and 39:29 for women. The one source that publishes an overall figure gives a median of 34:37 for all finishers. The two sources disagree by roughly four minutes, largely because one reports a median and the other an average converted from pace.
Is a 30-minute 5K good?
It is above the middle of the field. On the RunRepeat percentile study of 35 million race results, a 30:00 5K is faster than roughly 65% of men and about 70% of women who finish 5K races. It sits just inside the fastest 30% of the overall field.
Why is the average 5K time slower than the average marathon pace?
Because of who enters. The State of Running 2019 found the 5K has the slowest average pace of any common race distance, and attributes it to the 5K being the entry distance for almost everyone who starts racing. Marathon fields are self-selected for people who have already trained for months; 5K fields are where first-timers are.
Where can I find average 5K times by age?
You will find plenty of tables claiming to show them. We could not trace a single one to a published measurement, and the highest-ranking example states on its own about page that its standards come from well-known formulas rather than data. Rather than reprint a fabrication, we left the table out. For an age-adjusted comparison built on a real published standard, use an age-graded percentage instead.
Why don't you use parkrun data?
parkrun's terms prohibit scraping and reuse of its results data, and that also rules out the community scrapes and dataset mirrors derived from it. parkrun is the largest source of 5K times in the world, so declining to use it genuinely weakens this page — it is the main reason we have two sources here rather than five. We would rather have a thin page than a page built on data we were not permitted to take.
