How far is a 5K?
A 5K is 5 kilometres — 3.107 miles, 12.5 laps of a track. Plus how long it takes most runners, by age and experience.
A 5K is 5 kilometres — 3.107 miles, or 3 miles and 188 yards. The K is kilometres, so the number is the distance. There is no course variation to allow for: a parkrun, a charity 5K, a track 5000 m and the run leg of a sprint triathlon are all the same 5,000 metres.
One rounding worth knowing. 3.1 miles leaves you eleven metres short. Three miles leaves you 188 yards short — most of a lap of a running track. If you have been building up on a three-mile loop, race day is measurably longer than your longest training run.

Splits are even-pace checkpoints for 5K (5 km / 3.11 mi). Most runners are better served by starting 5–10 seconds per kilometre slower than target and making it back in the closing third.
For context on where any of those sit: the median 5K finish across 35 million race results is 34:37, which is 6:55 per kilometre. That is slower than people expect, and the reason is not that runners are slow — it is that 5K is the distance almost everyone races first, so the field is full of people running their first ever race and walking part of it. Against that distribution, sub-30 puts you inside the fastest 30% of finishers and sub-25 is roughly the top 10%.

How long does it take to walk a 5K?
Walking is not a lesser answer at this distance — a large share of 5K entrants walk some or all of it, and most events have no cut-off that would trouble a walker.
| How you cover it | Pace | Finish time |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary walking | 5 km/h | 1:00:00 |
| Brisk walking | 6.4 km/h (4 mph) | 47 min |
| Run-walk | 8:00 /km | 40 min |
| Run-walk | 7:00 /km | 35 min |
The run-walk rows matter more than they look. Alternating running and walking is not a fallback for people who cannot run 5 km — it is the method most beginner plans use to get you to 5 km, and plenty of people race that way permanently.
An 8-week beginner 5K build, by the numbers
What it takes to run 5 km without stopping is less than the internet implies. This is what Runsy's plan engine generates for a beginner with eight weeks — three runs a week, nothing longer than an hour, no track sessions. Generated by the engine that runs inside the app, not typed by hand.
The longest run in the plan is longer than the race
This is the whole difference between the 5K and every longer distance, and it is why a 5K is a realistic first race for almost anybody. Marathon plans stop three-quarters of the way to the distance and ask you to trust the taper. The 8-week 5K plan takes you to an 8 km long run — three kilometres past race distance — so by the time you reach the start line you have already covered five kilometres comfortably, several times over.
| Week | Phase | Long run | Week total |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Base | 5 km | 9 km |
| 2 | Base | 6 km | 11 km |
| 3 | Build | 7 km | 12 km |
| 4 | Cutback | 5 km | 9 km |
| 5 | Peak | 8 km | 15 km |
| 6 | Taper | 5 km | 9 km |
| 7 | Taper | 3 km | 5 km |
| 8 | Race | 5 km race | 10 km |
Note week 4. It is not a rest week you have earned or a week off — it is a planned 40% drop, because adaptation happens during the easier week rather than the hard one. Beginners skip cutback weeks more than any other part of a plan, and it is the most common route to a shin that hurts in week 6.
If eight weeks feels tight, the 12-week version builds to a 20 km peak week and an 11 km long run, which leaves a much wider margin on race day. Both start from the 5K plans index.
5K, 5000 m and parkrun — same distance, different words
5K vs 5,000 metres
Identical: 5,000 metres either way. "5000 m" is the track convention, where the race is 12.5 laps of a standard 400 m oval in lane 1. "5K" is the road and trail convention. A track 5000 m is usually faster than a road 5K for the same runner — no traffic, no camber, no hills, no crowd to get past in the first kilometre.
5K vs parkrun
A parkrun is a free, weekly, timed 5 km event. Same distance, different institution. Courses are on grass and gravel as often as tarmac, which makes parkrun times a slightly conservative read on your road 5K.
Where a 5K sits among the other distances
| Race | Kilometres | Miles | Track laps |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 mile | 1.609 | 1.00 | 4.02 |
| 5K | 5 | 3.11 | 12.5 |
| 10K | 10 | 6.21 | 25 |
| Half marathon | 21.0975 | 13.11 | 52.7 |
| Marathon | 42.195 | 26.22 | 105.5 |
The step from 5K to 10K is the easiest doubling in running — the 5K build already has you covering 8 km, so a 10K plan is a continuation rather than a restart.

Fair questions
How many miles is a 5K?
3.107 miles — precisely 3 miles and 188 yards. Rounding it to "3.1 miles" leaves you about eleven metres short, and rounding it to "3 miles" leaves you 188 yards short, which is most of a lap of a running track.
How long does it take to run a 5K?
The median finish across 35 million race results is 34:37, or 6:55 per kilometre. That figure is slow because 5K is the distance almost everyone races first, so the field includes a lot of first-timers walking part of it. Sub-30 puts you inside the fastest 30% of finishers, sub-25 is roughly the top 10%, and sub-20 is close to the top 1%.
How long does it take to walk a 5K?
About an hour at an ordinary walking pace of 5 km/h, or 47 minutes at a brisk 6.4 km/h (4 mph). A run-walk mix averaging 8:00 per kilometre finishes in 40 minutes. Most 5K events have no cut-off that would trouble a walker.
How many laps of a track is a 5K?
12.5 laps of a standard 400 m outdoor track, running in lane 1. Track races over this distance are usually written as 5000 m rather than 5K — it is the same distance.
How long does it take to train for a 5K?
Eight weeks is enough for most people starting from very little. Runsy's 8-week beginner plan runs three sessions a week, totals about 80 km across the block, peaks at a 15 km week, and takes the long run to 8 km — further than the race itself. A 12-week version builds to a 20 km peak week if you want more margin.
Is a 5K the same as 3 miles?
No. A 5K is 3.107 miles, so it is 188 yards — roughly 172 metres — longer than three miles. If your training loop is three miles, race day will be about a minute longer than you have been rehearsing.
Is a 5K the same as a parkrun?
The distance is the same: parkrun events are 5 km. The difference is the setting. parkrun is free, weekly and often run on grass or gravel, so a parkrun time tends to read slightly slower than the same runner's road 5K.
