There is no single NYC Marathon lottery

Almost every page written about the New York City Marathon drawing describes one lottery with one set of odds. New York Road Runners describes something else. On its own drawing page, the entries available to non-guaranteed applicants are filled through three drawings, one in each of three applicant pools:

  • NYC metro area — residents in New York City and within 60 miles of it.
  • National — U.S. residents outside the metro area, including Puerto Rico and other U.S. territories.
  • International — non-U.S. residents.

A drawing is conducted within each pool. You do not choose your pool; your address assigns it. This is the single most consequential fact about entering New York and it is missing from most of what is written about it — because a rate quoted for "the NYC Marathon lottery" is an average across three separate draws that you can only ever be in one of.

There is then a fourth draw. Current NYRR members who apply to the general drawing are automatically entered into the Member-Only Second-Chance Drawing, held the same day. Membership must be active the day before applications open and stay active through drawing day. No separate application is needed; eligibility is checked, not claimed.

The timeline, and the payment window nobody reads

Dates for the 2027 drawing had not been announced when this page was checked. The completed cycle gives the shape, and NYRR notes that all dates are subject to change.

The last two rows are the ones that quietly cost people a place. If the card is declined on drawing day, NYRR emails you and keeps retrying through March 11 — and then the application is forfeited. A card that expires between application and drawing, or a bank that blocks an unexpected charge from New York Road Runners, is enough to lose an entry you actually won. NYRR's own advice is to warn your bank in advance.

You are notified by email at the end of drawing day whether or not you were selected.

Eleven routes that skip the drawing

New York publishes more guaranteed-entry paths than any other major, and one of them is fully within your control. From NYRR's entry page for the 2027 race:

  • 9+1. Run nine qualifying NYRR races and volunteer at one qualifying event in a calendar year, with an active membership by December 31 of that year, and claim guaranteed entry for the following year's marathon. This is the deterministic route — it is not a draw, it is a checklist.
  • Time qualifier. Meet the standard at an eligible NYRR race for a guaranteed entry, or at a certified non-NYRR marathon for a limited-pool application. See our NYC qualifying times page for the standards and the difference between the two.
  • Completed 15+. Finishing your fifteenth New York City Marathon earns guaranteed entry in future years.
  • Official charity partners. Announced in the spring of the race year.
  • NYRR Team for Kids and NYRR Team for Climate — fundraising and pledge programmes with entry attached.
  • Philanthropic membership at the 5K and 10K levels, which carries guaranteed entry to the marathon and to all NYRR events for a year.
  • International tour operators, for non-full-time U.S. residents, announced early in the race year.
  • Virtual guaranteed entry — completing the guaranteed-entry tier of the Virtual TCS New York City Marathon.
  • Cancellation carry-over, for entrants who cancelled the previous year under NYRR's guidelines.

All of them are described as non-complimentary: guaranteed means a place is reserved for you, not that it is free. Each is claimed during a defined claim period rather than granted automatically, so a route earned in one year still has to be actioned in the next.

What NYRR does not publish, and what to do about it

NYRR does not publish applicant counts, per-pool place allocations or acceptance rates on its drawing page. Because the draw is split three ways, an overall rate would not tell you much even if it existed — an international applicant and a Brooklyn resident are not competing with each other.

The practical consequence is that the only levers you control are the ones NYRR states outright: hold an active NYRR membership before applications open, which adds the second-chance drawing at no extra step; make sure the card on file will still authorise in March; and, if you are within travelling distance of the NYRR calendar, start 9+1 rather than waiting on a draw you cannot handicap.

Athletes with a disability who do not already hold guaranteed entry apply through the same non-guaranteed drawing. NYRR's rules require that ambulatory, pushrim wheelchair and handcycle athletes propel themselves — guides and support runners are permitted but may not push. The Duo Team exhibition runs as a separate, application-based drawing.

Fair questions

How does the NYC Marathon lottery work?

It is officially the non-guaranteed general entry drawing, and it is three drawings rather than one. NYRR splits applicants into NYC metro area residents (within 60 miles), national U.S. residents, and international applicants, and runs a separate drawing in each pool. Current NYRR members who apply are also entered automatically into a Member-Only Second-Chance Drawing on the same day.

What are the odds of getting into the NYC Marathon lottery?

NYRR does not publish applicant numbers or acceptance rates for the drawing. Because the draw is split into three geographic pools, a single overall figure would not describe any individual applicant's chances anyway — you are only ever in one pool.

When is the NYC Marathon lottery?

Dates for the 2027 drawing had not been announced when this page was checked on 25 July 2026. In the most recent cycle the application window ran February 4–25 with the drawing held on March 4, and NYRR notes all dates are subject to change.

Do I get charged if I win the NYC Marathon lottery?

Yes, immediately and automatically. Submitting the application authorises NYRR to charge your card on acceptance, and NYRR does not contact applicants beforehand to reconfirm. If the charge is declined you have until March 10 to fix the card, with retries through March 11, after which the application is forfeited.

What is the NYRR member second-chance drawing?

A fourth drawing held on the same day as the general drawing, open only to current NYRR members who applied to the general drawing. Entry is automatic — no separate application. Your membership must be active the day before applications open and remain active through drawing day.

How do I get into the NYC Marathon without the lottery?

The most reliable route is 9+1: run nine qualifying NYRR races and volunteer at one qualifying event in a calendar year with an active membership, and claim guaranteed entry for the following year's marathon. Other routes include a qualifying time, fifteen career NYC Marathon finishes, charity and fundraising teams, philanthropic membership, international tour operators and the virtual race guaranteed-entry tier.

Can I withdraw my NYC Marathon lottery application?

Yes, but only before the drawing. Once you are accepted by any method you are charged the full registration fee immediately, and all fees are non-refundable and non-transferable.
