You ran 56.18% of the men's world standard for a 45-year-old over 5K. Run at peak age, the same effort is worth about 22:49.

An age grade compares you to the fastest human on earth of your age and sex — not to the runners around you at the start line. 100% is a world record for your age, so a 60% grade is a solid club runner, not a below-average one. Factors: 2025 WMA road standards via the Alan Jones tables (CC0).

What an age grade measures

An age grade answers one question: how close is this run to the fastest a human of your age and sex has ever run that distance?

World Masters Athletics maintains a standard time for every age from 5 to 100, at every common road distance. Your grade is that standard divided by your time. Run exactly the standard and you score 100%.

The number most people misread

Because 100% is a world record, the whole scale sits lower than intuition expects. A 50-year-old man running a 25:00 5K scores 58.42%. That is not a failing grade — it is a solidly trained club runner, measured against the fastest 50-year-old on earth, who runs 14:36.

The official masters bands are 90%+ world class, 80%+ national class, 70%+ regional class and 60%+ local class. They stop there, which leaves most of the running population unlabelled, so the calculator adds two of its own — 50%+ competitive club runner, below that recreational. Those two are descriptive, not official. Most people who race regularly and train seriously land between 50 and 65.

The open-class equivalent is the useful half

The percentage compares you to the world. The open-class equivalent compares you to yourself, and it is the number worth carrying around.

Multiply your finish time by your age factor and you get what the same effort would have been worth at peak age. A 50-year-old man's 5K factor is 0.8775, so his 25:00 is a 21:56 run at 30. A 45-year-old woman running a 4:00:00 marathon has a factor of 0.9386, making it a 3:45:16.

This is what makes age grading genuinely useful rather than merely flattering: it lets you compare a race you ran at 52 against one you ran at 38, and it lets two runners twenty years apart know who actually had the better day.

How the factors are built, and where they are shaky

The tables come from World Masters Athletics, maintained and published by Alan Jones. The 2025 set is the current one, and it is released under CC0 — which is why the full tables are printed on this page rather than hidden behind a calculator.

Each standard is fitted to the best performances ever recorded at that age. That construction has consequences worth knowing:

  • The extremes are thin. There are a great many fast 35-year-olds and very few 92-year-olds racing marathons. Standards at the far ends of the table rest on a handful of performances and move more between revisions.
  • Revisions move your score. The 2020 and 2025 tables give different grades for the same run. Neither is wrong; the population of records changed. Always say which year's tables a grade came from.
  • Road and track differ. These are the road standards. Track tables exist separately and give different numbers for the same nominal distance.
  • Nothing here is a distribution. An age grade is not a percentile among runners. It cannot tell you what fraction of your age group you would beat, because it is fitted to records, not to a field.

Fair questions

What is a good age-graded percentage?

The official bands are 90%+ world class, 80%+ national class, 70%+ regional class and 60%+ local class. They stop at 60, which is worth knowing: 100% is a world record for your exact age and sex, so most runners who train seriously score between 50 and 65. A 50-year-old man running a 25:00 5K grades at 58.42%, which is a good club runner, not a poor one.

How do I calculate my age grade?

Divide the world standard for your age, sex and distance by your finish time, then multiply by 100. The 5K standard for a 50-year-old man is 14:36, so a 25:00 gives 876.4 ÷ 1500 × 100 = 58.42%. The calculator above does it for every distance from a mile to the marathon; the factor tables let you check it by hand.

What is an age-graded time?

Your finish time converted to what it would have been worth at peak age. Multiply your time by your age factor: a 45-year-old woman's marathon factor is 0.9386, so her 4:00:00 is an age-graded 3:45:16. It is the number to use when comparing races run years apart.

Does age grading account for the fact that I am not a world-record holder?

No, and that is the design. Age grading measures you against the fastest human of your age, not against the field at your race. It cannot tell you your percentile among ordinary runners, because it is fitted to records rather than to a population.

Which age-grading tables does this use?

The 2025 World Masters Athletics road standards, via the Alan Jones tables published under CC0. Grades from the 2020 tables will differ slightly for the same run, so it is always worth saying which edition a percentage came from.
