Glass City Marathon course guide for the 50th running
The Mercy Health Glass City Marathon runs for the 50th time on Sunday, April 25, 2027. The course starts on Bancroft Street at the University of Toledo, loops out through Ottawa Hills, the University Parks Trail and Sylvania, and finishes on the field inside the Glass Bowl. The race calls itself America's Fastest Hometown Marathon and has the record to back it: over a third of the field runs a Boston qualifying time, and in 2026 Vincent Mauri ran 2:05:54 here, which the race lists as the fourth fastest American marathon in history and the fastest debut by an American.

Elevation: a 28 m band, and times that count
The race says the course has little elevation change and smooth paved roads. The USA Track and Field certificate it names on its marathon page, OH22014DH, gives the numbers: start at 182 m, finish at 186 m, lowest point 178 m and highest 206 m above sea level. So the finish is about 4 m (13 ft) higher than the start, and the whole course stays inside a 28 m (about 92 ft) band. A certificate does not give the total climb in between, so read 28 m as a range, not a climb figure.
That is why Glass City times are taken seriously. The B.A.A. accepts qualifying times only from certified courses and adjusts them only for 1,500 ft (457.2 m) or more of net downhill; Glass City finishes slightly higher than it starts. The race says it regularly ranks in the top 25 fastest races, it hosted the 2023 RRCA National Championship Marathon, and it is an Abbott World Marathon Majors Age Group Qualifier. See our Boston qualifying times for the standards and the BQ Course Index for other certified courses.
How to pace the Glass City Marathon
This section is Runsy's advice, not the race's. It is how we would run this course from the facts above.
- Fast and flat means even splits. Inside a 28 m band there is nothing to save yourself for. Settle on goal pace through the campus circle and hold it.
- Join a pace team. Dave's Running Shop leads pace teams that run even splits and do not slow at water stops, at many of the Boston qualifying times. If your goal matches a group, let them do the arithmetic.
- Ottawa Hills to Sylvania is the long middle. Quiet neighborhood streets and the bike trail are where a race gets lonely in your head. Break it into the race's own sections and tick them off.
- Save something for campus. The finish comes after a short tour of UT and ends on the field in the Glass Bowl. Finish strong for that.
- Rehearse an early start. The marathon page lists 6:30 a.m. Start a few long runs at that hour and practise an earlier breakfast.
- Know the limit. The course is open 6.5 hours, with two checkpoints, which needs about 15 minutes per mile.
Turn a goal time into splits with the marathon pace chart, or sanity-check the goal with the race time predictor.

Fifty runnings, and race-week logistics
The first Glass City Marathon was held on June 20, 1971, and one of its finishers was Fred Lebow, who came from New York City. Sy Mah, who ran that first race and went on to finish 524 marathons, is remembered with the statue runners pass in Olander Park. On April 25, 2027 the race celebrates its 50th running.
- Expo and packet pickup: Friday and Saturday of race week inside Savage Arena on the University of Toledo campus.
- Start line: 2925 W Bancroft St, Toledo.
- Course map: the race's Course Maps page links the marathon route on MapMyRun.
Training for it: our intermediate marathon plans are the base the plan bridge above builds from. The 16-week beginner plan suits a first marathon, and the advanced plans suit runners chasing a qualifying time.
