Cumulative clock time at each mile marker, at perfectly even pace over 42.195 km. Nobody runs even splits and nobody should try to; use these as the line you are measuring drift against, not as an instruction. The difference between the number here and the number on your watch is information — a minute up at 15 km is a race you are about to lose.

The pace, and the arithmetic

A 3-hour marathon is 6:52 per mile, or 4:16 per kilometre, held for 26.2 miles (42.195 km). On even pace you pass halfway at 1:30:00 and 20 miles at 2:17:18. To finish under 3:00, run 6:51 per mile, which finishes in 2:59:36.

How the numbers are worked out

  • 3:00:00 is 10,800 seconds.
  • Per mile: 10,800 ÷ 26.2188 miles = 411.9 s = 6:52.
  • Per kilometre: 10,800 ÷ 42.195 km = 256.0 s = 4:16.
  • At halfway: 10,800 × 21.0975 ÷ 42.195 = 5,400.0 s = 1:30:00.
  • At 20 miles: 10,800 × 20 ÷ 26.2188 = 8,238.4 s = 2:17:18.
  • At 40 km: 10,800 × 40 ÷ 42.195 = 10,238.2 s = 2:50:38.
  • Speed: 26.2188 miles ÷ 3 h = 8.74 mph (14.06 km/h).

Every split on this page uses one formula: goal seconds × distance covered ÷ race distance, rounded to the nearest second. A mile is 1.609344 km, so the marathon is 26.2188 miles. The marathon pace chart applies the same formula to every realistic finish time.

Where 3:00 sits in the field

RunRepeat's finish-time percentiles (35M results across 28,000+ races, as printed on our average marathon time page) place 3:00:00 between the fastest 1% (2:50:48) and the fastest 10% (3:31:46) of all finishers. For men it sits between the fastest 1% (2:44:18) and the fastest 10% (3:22:40); for women, faster than the 3:11:35 that marks the fastest 1%.

Read the other way: a sub-3 beats more than 90% of all finishers in that data, and a woman running 3:00 is faster than the 3:11:35 that marks the fastest 1% of women.

3:00:00 is also the Boston Marathon qualifying standard for men aged 35 to 39, for both the 2027 and 2028 races. Meeting it is not enough on its own: the 2027 cut-off was 5:17, so those runners needed 2:54:43 or faster to be accepted. Details on our Boston qualifying times page.

At Chicago, 3:00:00 is the standard for men aged 40 to 44, and because Chicago runs no cut-off, a verified time inside it guarantees entry (Chicago Marathon qualifying times).

How to train for a sub-3 marathon

Check the goal before you train for it. Riegel's formula, T2 = T1 × (D2 ÷ D1)^1.06 (Riegel, American Scientist 69(3), 1981), says 3:00:00 for the marathon is worth:

  • Half marathon: 10,800 × (21.0975 ÷ 42.195)^1.06 = 5,180 s = 1:26:20.
  • 10K: 10,800 × (10 ÷ 42.195)^1.06 = 2,348 s = 39:08.

Riegel is optimistic when it predicts a marathon from a shorter race. Treat a recent half marathon near 1:26 as the minimum evidence for sub-3, not proof. Run your own recent result through the race time predictor, and use the VDOT calculator to turn it into training paces.

Then pick a plan. Sub-3 is the advanced end of the marathon: it asks for an established base and two quality sessions a week, which is what the advanced level assumes. The free 16-week advanced marathon plan is 5 runs a week with two quality sessions, peaking at 86 km with a 35 km long run, with cutback weeks and a taper. Build sustained sections at 6:52 per mile into the long runs, so race pace is familiar before race day. If sub-3 is a stretch this cycle, 3:30 marathon pace is 8:01 per mile.

Stop calculating. Start training.

Fair questions

How quick is a 3-hour marathon?

It is 6:52 per mile (4:16 per km), a steady 8.74 mph (14.06 km/h) for 26.2 miles. In RunRepeat's percentiles the fastest 10% of marathon finishers run 3:31:46 or better and the fastest 1% run 2:50:48 or better, so 3:00 sits between the two.

What is sub-3 marathon pace per km?

4:16 per km is exactly 3:00:00 to the nearest second (10,800 ÷ 42.195 = 255.95 s). Run 4:15 per km and you finish in 2:59:20, a margin of about 40 seconds.

How do you avoid hitting the wall in a marathon?

Pace and fuel. The wall is what happens when the carbohydrate stored in your muscles and liver runs low, and you control how fast you burn it and how much you take in. Start no faster than goal pace, practise your race-day fuelling in long runs, and put sustained goal-pace sections into the final long runs.

What pace is a 3:15 marathon?

7:26 per mile, or 4:37 per kilometre, passing halfway at 1:37:30. It is also the Boston qualifying standard for men aged 45 to 49.

Is a 3-hour marathon a Boston qualifier?

For men aged 35 to 39, 3:00:00 is the B.A.A. standard for both 2027 and 2028; men aged 18 to 34 need 2:55:00. The standard only lets you apply: the 2027 cut-off was 5:17, so a 35 to 39 man needed 2:54:43 or faster to be accepted.
