Boston's Run to Remember half marathon course

Boston's Run to Remember is on Sunday, May 30, 2027, with the half marathon and 5 miler starting together at 7:00 a.m. on Seaport Blvd. The race is a tribute to fallen law enforcement officers and first responders, and its course is a historic tour of downtown Boston: the race lists the Seaport District, the Old State House, Government Center, Faneuil Hall, Boston Common, the Theatre District and Post Office Square. Half marathoners also run along the Charles River by MIT and Harvard. The course's USA Track and Field certificate, MA19013BK, keeps it between 2 and 12 m above sea level.

Elevation: a 10 m band through the city

The race's course page links its USA Track and Field course map, certificate MA19013BK. The certificate puts the start and finish at 3 m above sea level, the lowest point at 2 m and the highest at 12 m, so the whole half marathon stays inside a 10 m (about 33 ft) band and finishes exactly as high as it starts. It describes the course as a loop with several out and backs.

A certificate gives a range, not the total climb in between, so read 10 m as the band the course stays inside. For a half marathon through a city, there is very little to plan around.

How to pace Boston's Run to Remember

This section is Runsy's advice, not the race's. It is how we would run this course from the facts above.

  • Seed yourself honestly. Corral 1 is sub 9:00 per mile, Corral 2 is 9:00 to 11:00, and Corral 3 is 11:00 and up. The first 2 miles are shared with the 5 miler, so a sensible corral saves more time than weaving.
  • Settle in before the Longfellow Bridge. The split near mile 2 thins the field. That is the place to find goal pace.
  • Use the river miles. The stretch along the Charles to the Memorial Drive turnaround is the steadiest part of the course. Hold even splits there.
  • Bring your own fuel. The race lists water, Gatorade and toilets at its aid stations, with water only at station 1, and no gels.
  • Mind the pace line. The race encourages anyone slower than 13:44 per mile to run the 5 miler, and a sag bus at mile 11 sweeps runners over the cut-off pace.

Turn a goal time into splits with the half marathon pace chart, or sanity-check the goal with the race time predictor.
